Abstract

Bullae, by definition, are air-filled cavities with a diameter of at least 1 cm in a ventilated lung and are demarcated from the lung parenchyma by their walls. Underlying is a mostly emphysematous illness, often leading to an increase in the air-filled cavity and, as such, to compression of the adjacent parenchyma and consecutive dyspnea or infection symptoms. Complications such as infections, hemorrhaging, and pneumothorax often occur within the bulla.
