Abstract
Emphysema is a chronic progressive condition of the lung characterized by an abnormal, permanent enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles accompanied by destruction of their walls, but without fibrosis. It is characterized by permanent impairment of the pulmonary terminal airway, hyperinflation of the parenchyma, and loss of elastic retraction.
