Abstract
Only a few households in Germany witnessed the event which changed the nation's broadcasting landscape forever: On December 8, 1989 three analogue transponders on Astra 1A (19.2 degrees East), which had been carrying Astra test captions for months, suddenly sprang to life. Germany's main commercial television channels RTL plus (now RTL), SAT.1 and PRO 7 (now ProSieben) appeared, broadcasting their regular programmes. And they could simply be picked up with a conventional analogue DTH satellite system on a common TV set in PAL picture standard.
