Abstract

The thoracoscopic approach to the pericardium is a minimally invasive alternative to the standard operation via a thoracotomy and to the subxiphoid pericardial window. Thoracoscopic pericardial fenestration allows precise diagnostic assessment of the ipsilateral thoracic and pericardial space and the concomitant management of effusions from both cavities. Therapy for acute pericardial tamponade and malignant pericardial effusion is quick and reliable, usually via a left thoracoscopy.
