Abstract
CyberKnife® (CK) robotic stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a noninvasive method to deliver radiation dose distributions that very closely resemble those delivered by high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. We have applied “Virtual HDR” CK SBRT as an “HDR surrogate,” using comparable dose fractionation schedules in all settings where HDR brachytherapy has been applied, including as monotherapy for favorable to intermediate-risk cases, as a boost for high risk cases and as a salvage method for post-radiotherapeutic relapse cases.
Clinical results are encouraging in all three settings, suggesting at least comparable safety and efficacy. Our Virtual HDR CyberKnife monotherapy pilot series to test the equivalence to HDR brachytherapy and other methods of radiation delivery continues, as does a significantly larger multi-institutional series, to confirm our pilot series findings in a larger number of patients, treated across a wider variety of CyberKnife practices.
