Abstract

Spinal metastases are the most frequently occurring spine tumor and can arise in up to 30–50% of patients diagnosed with cancer (Wong et al. 1990; Heidecke et al. 2003; Ortiz Gomez 1995). The incidence and prevalence of bone metastases is expected to increase due to better detection and with the improvement of therapies for the primary malignancy that are prolonging patient survival. Early stages of spine metastases may be asymptomatic but delayed recognition of the problem and initiation of treatment can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life (QOL) due to disabling pain, fractures or even paralysis from spinal cord compression (Ibrahim et al. 2008; Patchell et al. 2005).
