Das Varicella-Zoster-Virus (VZV) ist ein DNA-Virus aus der Familie der Herpesviren. Es ist der identische Erreger für Varizellen (Windpocken) und das Krankheitsbild des Zosters. Die Zosterinfektion entsteht durch eine Reaktivierung des Virusmaterials aus den Spinalganglien, die lebenslang im Organismus persistieren.
