Abstract

In the early 1970s, François MURAT and myself were not aware of the theory of G-convergence, the convergence of Green kernels, which Sergio SPAGNOLO developed in the late 1960s, helped with the insight of Ennio DE GIORGI.

It is sometimes useful not to know about previous attempts to solve a problem, so that one may find a slightly different approach, and this is precisely what happened in our case, and we based our analysis on our Lemma 4.2, while Sergio SPAGNOLO used a regularity result of MEYERS (which we were not aware of). Although generalizing this regularity result is a little difficult, the localization property which Sergio SPAGNOLO proved out of it is stronger than the version that we arrived at by our approach.1
