Abstract
On a liquid metal electrode all surface sites are equivalent, and the deposition of a metal ion from the solution is conceptually simple: The ion loses a part of its solvation sheath, is transferred to the metal surface, and is discharged simultaneously; after a slight rearrangement of the surface atoms it is incorporated into the electrode. The details of the process are little understood, but it seems that the discharge step is generally rate determining, and the Butler–Volmer equation is obeyed if the concentration of the supporting electrolyte is sufficiently high.
