Abstract
A 70-year-old woman presented with complaints of neck pain after she tripped and fell down five stairs. She was immobilized at the scene of the accident in a rigid cervical orthosis and transported to the emergency department by ambulance. On physical examination, she was awake, alert, and oriented. She had evidence of facial trauma with abrasions and ecchymosis. Her motor and sensory examination was intact. She had normal rectal tone and no evidence of hyperreflexia in her upper and lower extremities. Her past medical history was significant for hypertension, osteoporosis, and mild COPD. She smoked about 10 cigarettes per day and had a 25-pack-year history of smoking.
