Zusammenfassung
Der im Titel anzitierte Satz „By the crowd they have been broken, by the crowd they shall be healed“, geht zurück auf Cody Marsh (1933, vgl. ▶ Kap. 2), einen Pionier der sog. Milieutherapie . Der Satz drückt sehr gut aus, wie ambivalent Gruppen erlebt werden und dass sie sowohl destruktive wie heilende Kräfte haben können. Auf Erstere hat beispielsweise Freud (u. a. in seiner berühmten Schrift Massenpsychologie und Ich-Analyse von 1921) immer wieder hingewiesen. Andere Psychoanalytiker, wie z. B. Slavson, Wolf oder Foulkes haben dagegen auf die heilende Wirkung von Gruppen gesetzt und Anwendungen psychoanalytischer Therapie in der Gruppe entwickelt, die neben anderen Entwicklungen, beispielsweise in der humanistischen Psychotherapie, dazu geführt haben, dass in den späten 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren Gruppen eine wahre Hochzeit hatten.
