Abstract
Building on the works of Floquet and Poincaré, the Russian mathematician Lyapunov published in 1892 an even more general study of the stability problem in which arbitrary and also nonperiodic motions were admitted. The characteristic exponents introduced by Lyapunov have played a central role in the theory of nonlinear systems.
