Abstract
The general motion of a rigid body can be described as a translation and a rotation about a point of the body. This is just the content of Chasles’ theorem. If the origin of the body-fixed coordinate system is set at the center of gravity of the body, one can separate the center-of-mass motion and the rotation in all practical cases. For this reason, the rotation of a rigid body about a fixed point is of particular significance.
