Abstract
Durrant-Whyte (2001) classified five critical technologies for the realization of autonomous mobile field robots which are highly applicable to planetary rovers [761]: (i) terrain mobility; (ii) self-location; (iii) local navigation; (iv) global navigation; (v) communications. All of these issues are associated in one form or another with autonomous navigation.
