Abstract

The character of the dislocation motion and the relation between the average velocity and the applied stress are controlled by the interplay between the forces on the dislocation segments, which vary in space and time, and the spectrum of barriers to the dislocation motion. The barriers are very different with respect to their geometric extension and to their interaction strength, ranging from arrangements of other dislocations with long-range stress fields to individual foreign atoms, which interact with the moving dislocations only in a very limited range.
