Once you are in a foreign hospital you will probably have the chance to do “the real thing,” i.e., you will fi nally be able to participate in “hands-on” surgery. On that day, you will probably feel that the English you have learned before is insuffi cient because you will probably lack the basic words for the situation, including words for surgical instruments.
How do you ask for something to cut with, to grasp with, to soak ….? Fortunately, many surgical instruments are called by their designer's name, so you will probably manage to survive somehow.
