Wir haben dieses Buch mit den ersten Aufsätzen von Paul Erdős in der Zahlentheorie begonnen. Wir schließen es nun mit dem Beitrag zur Mathematik, der wohl sein größtes Vermächtnis bleiben wird – der Probabilistischen Methode, die er gemeinsam mit Alfred Rényi entwickelt hat. In ihrer einfachsten Form besagt sie:
Wenn auf einer Menge von Objekten die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ein Objekt eine bestimmte Eigenschaft nicht hat, kleiner als 1 ist, dann muss es ein Objekt mit der Eigenschaft geben.
