Abstract

The great Wenchuan earthquake caused much damage in Sichuan and neighbor provinces in Western China. As described above, it occurred along the Longmenshan thrust belt that is situated at the transformation site between the NEE-directing compressive stress field of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau and the NW-directing compressive stress field of the western part of the South China block. Around the Longmenshan thrust belt is a complicated fault system (i.e. Chuan-Dian fault system) that collectively accommodate lithosphere motion in the eastern Tibetan Plateau
