Zusammenfassung

Als Teil des Abwehrsystems gliedert sich das lymphatische System in die lymphatischen Organe und das Lymphgefäßsystem. Durch die Funktion des Lymphtransportes steht es dabei in enger Beziehung zum Blutkreislauf. Das Kardinalsymptom einer Erkrankung der Lymphgefäße ist das Lymphödem, das durch Zunahme interstitieller, eiweißreicher Flüssigkeit entsteht. Es ist relativ selten und von einer Vielzahl anderer ödembildender Erkrankungen zu unterscheiden. Dem Lymphödem liegt eine Abflussstörung zugrunde, bei der das Lymphdrainagesystem primär aufgrund einer genetischen Disposition oder sekundär als Folge einer anderen Ursache erkrankt ist (► Übersicht).
