Zusammenfassung
Um die komplexe Aufgabe des Ventilierens zu erfüllen, brauchen die Lungen ein mechanisches Belüftungssystem, das in der Lage ist, einerseits Luft aufzunehmen (Inspiration) und andererseits Luft wieder an die Atmosphäre abzugeben (Exspiration). Die Lungen selbst besitzen keine kontraktilen Elemente für diesen Vorgang. Zuständig für die Lungenventilation sind also die Atemmuskeln, die in enger Verbindung mit den nicht kontraktilen Teilen des Atembewegungsapparates stehen.
