Abstract
This paper addresses coreference of topicalized and untopicalized subjects in Japanese complex sentences which is known to depend on the type of subordinate clause head and topicalization of the matrix subject. We provide an account based on Scope Control Theory, a semantic theory using operator-variable dependencies, which explains the above-mentioned issue as part of regularities deriving from the hierarchical structure in Japanese sentences.
