Abstract
This monograph is devoted to the Leydig cells of rodent and human testes. In addition to reviewing the endocrine properties of the Leydig cells, we have paid particular attention to their striking, more recently established, neuroendocrine features. These features are stressed by the expression of a large number of neuroactive substances. Indicating importance for testis physiological function, some of these molecules are involved in the communication between neighbouring Leydig cells, Leydig and Sertoli cells, or Leydig cells and the testicular vasculature.
