Zusammenfassung

Sinnesleistungen, die über unser eigenes Vermögen hinausgehen, faszinieren uns und stimulieren die Frage, ob uns vielleicht unbewusst ebenfalls ein entsprechender Sinn zur Verfügung steht. Der verbreitete, vom Wunschdenken getragene Glaube an verborgene Quellen der Erfahrung hat es andererseits dem Tierphysiologen nicht immer leicht gemacht, seine durchaus erstaunlichen Befunde gegen Legenden und Aberglaube abzugrenzen. Gesichert ist, dass es mehrere Tierarten gibt, die elektrische Felder erspüren können. Andere nutzen das Magnetfeld der Erde zur Navigation. Manche können in der Nacht ihre Opfer orten, weil sie die von Warmblütern ausgehende Wärmestrahlung detektieren können.
