Neugeborene und kleine Säuglinge können gleichzeitig über die Nasa atmen und mit dem Mund saugen. Während des Stillens sind sie durch einige anatomische Besonderheiten des Larynx und Hypopharynx gut vor Aspiration geschützt. Die Epiglottis bildet mit dem weichen Gaumen eine funktionelle Verbindung in den Nasopharynx. Dies ist möglich, weil die Epiglottis weich ist und der Larynx höher liegt als beim Erwachsenen. Zudem ist die Epiglottis beim Säugling Ω-förmig, während sie beim Erwachsenen in der Horizontal-ebene die Form eines leicht gekrümmten Bogens hat (⊡ Abb. 8.1–8.3).
