Kinder mit Herzerkrankungen bilden eine heterogene Gruppe. Die anästhesiologische Betreuung von Kindern, die einen erfolgreichen chirurgischen Eingriff bei unkomplizierten Vitien durchgemacht haben (Verschluss eines Vorhofs- oder eines Ventrikelseptumdefekts, ASD bzw. VSD), unterscheidet sich häufig nicht von derienigen gesunder Kinder. Andererseits gibt es Neugeborene und kleine Säuglinge, deren Herzfehler eine Notfalloperation erforderlich macht, und ältere Kinder, die sich nach einer Palliativoperation in einem schlechten Zustand befinden und einen weiteren herzchirurgischen Eingriff benötigen.
