Abstract
The Springer family came from Frankfurt-on-Oder, where Julius Springer’s grandfather had obtained a trading licence in 1764, immediately after the Seven Year War. In 1812 Julius Springer’s father, Isidor (1771–1836), settled in Berlin where he acquired citizenship on November 15, 1813, and in 1815 he obtained a licence as merchant. In the same year he married Marianne Friedlaender (1788–1817), who came from a well-to-do Berlin family. Julius, their only child, was born in Berlin on May 10,1817. His mother died of puerperal fever after his birth, so he was looked after as a baby by his grandmother Henriette Friedlaender (née Levy).
