Molecular Signaling Pathways in Nasopharyngeal Cancer

  • Chapter
Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique type of head and neck malignancy that shows a clear regional and racial prevalence. It occurs most commonly in Asians who inhabit in the Southern Chinese provinces and Southeast Asia (Ma and Cao 2009). The biological behavior of NPC differs significantly from other types of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, which are abbreviated here as SCCHN: NPC has the highest propensity of regional and distant metastases when compared with SCCHN. At the same time, NPC is more sensitive to ionizing radiation and chemotherapy.
