When Al-Sarraf et al. (1996) presented the preliminary results of the U. S. Intergroup 0099 Trial at the plenary session of the 1996 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), it signaled the advent of a new era in head and neck oncology and a paradigm shift in the role of chemotherapy as an adjunct to radiation therapy (RT) in the curative management of head and neck cancer, nasopharyn-geal cancer (NPC) in particular. Today, concurrent chemoradiation therapy is considered a standard of care for all patients with locally advanced NPC worldwide (NCCN 2008; Chan and Felip 2008).
