In any large scale process which has widespread effects, such as globalization, we will find both major opportunities and major concerns. The process of globalization has evoked strong views, both in favour and against. There are various views, including for instance that there is nothing new about globalization, that globalization is fundamentally changing the socio-economic situation, there has been a “death of distance”, there are major adverse changes taking place, and that there are multiple opportunities available to people and nations. To address the topic of this session, I feel that instead of looking at the details of why the right kind of globalization does not happen, it is more useful to have a positive approach and consider the factors which will help build the right kind of globalization. As my starting point, I want to use the six guide posts that President Horst Kohler had provided a few years ago to help achieve better globalization.
