Erkrankungen des Ovars im Kindesalter beschränken sich fast ausschließlich aufzystische odersolide Raumforderungen unterschiedlicher Dignität. Bei Säuglingen und Kleinkindern sind die Ovarien im Bauch gelegen und deszendieren bis zur Pubertät in das kleine Becken. Daher fallen ovarielle Raumforderungen bei Kindern häufig als abdominelle Tumoren auf. Aufgrund derschmalen Aufhängung an der seitlichen Beckenwand und dem Uterusfundus sind die Ovarien, wenn sie vergrößert sind, zudem häufig sehr mobil und können torquieren (Adkins 2005).
