Erkrankungen des Hodens umfassen kongenitale Anomalien (Lageanomalien) des Hodens wie auch erworbene Erkrankungen (im Wesentlichen entzündlicher oder ischämischer Genese bei sog. akutem Skrotum). Bei den kongenitalen Lageanomalien (Hodenhochstand) sollte die korrekte Hodenlage im Skrotum vor Vollendung des ersten Lebensjahres erfolgt sein. Das akute Skrotum ist immer als Notfall zu betrachten, da eine Hodentorsion als mögliche Ursache unverzüglich operativer Therapie bedarf. Dennoch ist diese in lediglich 10–30% der Fälle ursächlich. Herausforderung bei der Behandlung des akuten Skrotums ist also nach wie vor das Erkennen der richtigen Differenzialdiagnose ohne zu häufig operativ explorieren zu müssen.
