Kinder untersuchen neugierig ihre gesamte Umgebung. Die Vorliebe Vieles in den Mund zu stecken führt immer wieder zu einer Fremdkörperingestion. Am häufigsten sind dabel Kleinkinder betroffen. Ein großer Teil an Frendkörperingestionen bleibt vermutlich unbemerkt. Andere werden beobachtet und bleiben klinisch und therapeutisch ohne Konsequenzen. Bei einem kleinen Teil der Kinder ist die Entfernung des Fremdkörpers nötig, da ansonsten ein hohes Risiko für zum Teil schwere Komplikationen besteht.
