Die operative Versorgung angeborener Fehlbildungen gehört zu den Schlüsselkompetenzen der Kinderchirurgie. Bei bestimmten Fehlbildungen müssen die erforderlichen Eingriffe in den ersten Stunden oder Tagen nach der Geburt erfolgen, zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem die perinatalen Umstellungsvorgänge noch nicht zur Gänze abgeschlossen sind. Die Kenntnis dieser Vorgänge ist deshalb wichtig für die Wahl des Operationszeitpunkts, die intraoperative Narkoseführung und das postoperative Management auf der Neugeborenen-Intensivstation. Frühgeborene sind darüber hinaus für die Anpassung auf das postnatale Leben im Bereich vieler Organsysteme nur unzureichend vorbereitet. In Abhängigkeit vom Grad dieser Unreife ergeben sich Komplikationen, die der Kinderchirurg kennen und manchmal auch behandeln muss.
