Die Häufigkeit angeborener Herzfehler beträgt in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland etwa 8…%, bezogen auf die Zahl der Lebendgeburten. Herzfehler, die sich innerhalb des 1. Lebensmonats klinisch manifestieren, werden als kritisch bezeichnet. Ohne Operation beträgt die Lebenserwartung von Kindern mit kritischem Herzfehler weniger als 6 Monate.
