Abstract
Ontology has caught on as a major tool in both the Web 2.0 and in multi-agent systems. In Web 2.0, ontology is being used to extend the search capability; for multi-agent systems, ontology becomes a basis for communication and negotiation. In support of both these areas of application, the designer needs to apply ontology with care to realize the advantages of ontology. The coverage in this chapter is to clarify some of the issues around the use of ontology, especially in the case of multiple ontologies from multiple sources and/or authors. The issues include types (uses) of ontologies, good design principles, mapping and grounding. The approach taken is designed to provide the practitioner to find guidelines and techniques to apply in problem solving.
