Abstract

In a recent publication of the National Security Agency, United States of America, History and Publication Division, a leaflet with the attractive title The Bombe: Prelude to Modern Cryptanalysis, an historical error on the Enigma is repeated which has been copied for decades. It states that “Hugo Koch, a Dutchman, conceived the machine in 1919. Arthur Scherbius first produced it commercially in 1923”. It is time to return to historical correctness.
