Mit einer Penetrationsrate von 118,1% (Bundesnetzagentur 2008) ist der Markt für mobile Endgeräte in Deutschland inzwischen vollständig erschlossen. Gleichzeitig erhöht sich der Preisdruck im Bereich der mobilen Sprachtelefonie durch den Markteinstieg von Mobilfunkdiscountern sowie EU-Verordnungen zur Senkung der Roaming-Preise. Um dennoch Wachstumspotenziale realisieren zu können, sehen sich die Mobilfunkanbieter zunehmend gezwungen, neue Anwendungen zu etablieren, die sich ähnlich wie der Short Message Service (SMS) zu zusätzlichen Umsatztreibern entwickeln. Nach Meinung vieler Marktbeobachter könnten Location Based Services (LBS), d.h. mobile Dienste, die sich an den aktuellen Standort des Nutzers anpassen, diese Rolle übernehmen. LBS können jedoch am Markt nur langfristig erfolgreich sein, wenn sie seitens potenzieller Nutzer akzeptiert werden. Die Konsumentenakzeptanz ortsbezogener mobiler Anwendung wird daher im Rahmen der vorliegenden Studie untersucht. Als Ergebnis lässt sich festhalten, dass die Akzeptanz von LBS primär durch die Einstellung zur Nutzung und die subjektive Norm determiniert wird. Die Einstellung zur Nutzung von LBS wird wiederum positiv durch die wahrgenommene Preiswürdigkeit, die wahrgenommene Dienstqualität sowie stark durch das wahrgenommene Vergnügen bestimmt.
