Brustschmerzen, Kopfschmerzen, Schwindelgefühle, Rückenschmerzen, Erschöpfungszustände oder Atemnot zählen zu den häufigsten körperlichen Beschwerden, die Personen zum Aufsuchen eines Arztes motivieren. Gerade diese Spitzenreiter körperlicher Beschwerden wurden in einer Untersuchung von Kroenke u. Mangelsdorff (1988) näher untersucht. Das überraschende Ergebnis dieser Studie war, dass nur für durchschnittlich 16% dieser körperlichen Beschwerden eine eindeutige organische Ursache auszumachen war. Die meisten dieser Symptome konnten auch im Dreijahresverlauf nicht durch organische Grunderkrankungen erklärt werden (⊡ Abb. 12.1).
