Abstract

Expression of Human Neutrophil Peptides (HNP)1–3 was recently found to be associated with development of colorectal cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of α-defensins on migration of colorectal cancer cells in vitro. A modified Boyden chamber assay was used for the tests. HNP1–3 was added to HT29 colon cancer cells in concentrations of 5, 10, 15 und 30 µg/ml. Migration was raised in all concentrations compared to control groups but reached its climax at a concentration of 15 µg/ml (44.9 ± 7.8 versus 21.6 ± 6.0, P < 0.007). Results suggest that HNP1–3 adding on CRC cells can modulate their migratory behavior in a dose-dependant manner. An increased migration, as shown here, leaves a higher probability of metastatic induction in vivo.
