Seit seiner Etablierung in den späten 1980ern ist Data Warehousing in vielen Unternehmen ein integraler Bestandteil der Informationslogistik (Winter 2000, vgl. auch Kap. 3). In der Vergangenheit konzentrierte sich die Forschung hauptsächlich auf Aspekte der Entwicklung und Einführung eines Data Warehouse (DWH) (Meyer 2000, S. VII). Die nachhaltige organisatorische Implementierung des Data-Warehousing-Prozesses rückt dagegen erst seit kurzem in den Fokus der Betrachtungen. Bisherige Arbeiten zum Thema DWH-Organisation konzentrieren sich vorrangig auf strukturelle Aspekte der Organisation, wie z. B. Projektmanagement, Entwicklungsmethoden, Modellierungstechniken (Devlin 1997; Adelman u. Moss 2000; Inmon 2002; Kimball u. Ross 2002; Herrmann 2004; Strauch u. Winter 2004). Vorwiegend von Praktikern wurden Funktions- oder Rollenmodelle vorgestellt, die für das Data Warehousing langfristig organisatorisch zu implementieren sind (Kachur 2000; McKnight 2000; Winter u. Meyer 2001; Gallo 2002; Smith 2005). Für ausgewählte Aspekte des Data Warehousing wurden Referenzmodelle entwickelt, die Gestaltungsvorschläge zur organisatorischen Implementierung wesentlicher Aufgaben des Data Warehousing liefern (Auth 2003; Herrmann 2006). In jüngster Zeit werden überdies Betreibermodelle diskutiert, welche sich mit dem Outsourcing und Offshoring von DWH-Teilprozessen beschäftigen (Philippi 2004).
