In der Vergangenheit wurden logistische Dienstleistungen eher unter operativ funktionalen Gesichtspunkten diskutiert (Vasiliauskas et al. 2007). Im Wesentlichen können diese in die Bereiche Transport-, Lager-, Speditions- sowie neuerdings Value-Added-Dienstleistungen unterteilt werden (Sheffi 1990, Lynch 2004, Aertsen 1993). Jeder dieser Bereiche wurde sowohl in Forschung und Industrie tiefergehend analysiert und in seine Bestandteile zerlegt (Maloni und Carter 2006).

Kühne + Nagel wurde 2005 mit dem Deutschen Logistik-Preis ausgezeichnet.
