Zusammenfassung
Basalte stellen die wichtigste Gruppe der vulkanischen Gesteine dar, die erdweit in großer Verbreitung auftreten. Bildung, Differentiation und Förderung basaltischer Magmen haben enge Beziehungen zur Plattentektonik (z. B. Pearce u. Cann 1973; Tabelle 17.1). Experimentelle Untersuchungen in vereinfachten Modellsystemen und an natürlichen Gesteinen haben viel dazu beigetragen, die Entstehung von Basalt-Magmen durch partielle Anatexis von Peridotit im Oberen Erdmantel besser zu verstehen.
