Diagnosis of Side Effects of Dental Materials, with Special Emphasis on Delayed and Immediate Allergic Reactions

  • Chapter
Biocompatibility of Dental Materials

Abstract

The diagnosis of side effects to dental materials and the differentiation to other diseases are very demanding challenges for the dental clinician. This chapter provides numerous clinical examples of verified adverse reactions to dental materials, as well as examples of differential diagnostic considerations when handling dental patients attributing local or systemic symptoms to the presence of dental materials. Symptoms of allergic reactions to dental materials are often non-specific and therefore represent particular challenges to the diagnostic skills of the dentist. Special emphasis is therefore placed on clinical aspects of allergic reactions to dental materials.
