Self-adjointness of Schrödinger operators has been a fundamental mathematical problem since the beginning of quantum mechanics. It is equivalent to the unique solvability of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and it plays a basic role in the foundations of quantum mechanics, since only self-adjoint operators can ben understood as quantum mechanical observables(in the sense of von Neumann).
