The initial objective of this program was to develop a conceptual model for holonic manufacturing execution, similar in concept to the manufacturing execution architectures described in Chapter 2. That is the model would be constrained to manufacturing systems and this would be clearly reflected in the resultant ontology, which would be based on the key concepts of orders, products and resources. Through our involvement in the HMS project and the wider HMS research community, we had been directly involved in the design and development of several industry-based holonic execution systems; the intent was that they would provide the basis for a conceptual model for manufacturing execution.
