Unzufriedenheit mit der körperlichen Erscheinung, allem voran, sich zu dick zu fühlen, ist ein weit verbreitetes Phänomen, das häufig mit einem gestörten Essverhalten einhergeht. Versuche, die I dealnorm—häufg ein unre alistisches Gewicht, das vor allem durch soziokulturelle Einfl üsse definiert ist-zu erreichen, führt zu Diätversuchen Die Kombination von einem gestörten Körperbild und Diätverhalten führt nicht selten zu einer manifesten Esstörung mit anorektischen und/oder bulimischen Symptomen, insbesondere bei Jugendlichen und jungen erwachsenen Frauen, jedoch auch—wenn auch deutlich weniger häufig—beim männlichen Geschlecht Erklärungsmodelle der ungleichen Geschlechtsverteilung reichen von soziokulturellen bis zu biologischen Faktoren, ohne dass es bislang eine hinreichende Erklärung für diese auch kulturübergreifenden Geschlechtsunterschiede gibt Der Unterschied ist jedoch deutlich weniger geschlechtsspezifisch bei partiellen Essstörungen.
