Da Rückenkrankheiten zu den häufigsten chronischen Leiden in der Bevölkerung zählen, sind Patienten mit Rückenschmerzen in jeder Praxis außerordentlich häufig. Für den Arzt besteht die Hauptschwierigkeit darin, dass sich hinter dem uniformen subjektiven Symptom „Rückenschmerzen“ zahlreiche sehr differente Krankheitsbilder verstecken könen. Das breite Gesamtspektrum der Erkrankungen der Wirbelsäule und ihrer Grenzgelenke ist aus Übersicht 7.1 ersichtlich. In der Praxis bewährt es sich, für die Differenzialdiagnose eine einfache Checkliste durchzugehen (Übersicht 7.2).
