Was ist das Alter(n) der Persönlichkeit? Eine Antwort aus verhaltenswissenschaftlicher Sicht

Im nachfolgenden Kapitel möchte ich der scheinbar einfachen Frage „Was ist Alter(n)?“ nachgehen, indemich mich aus verhaltenswissenschaftlicher Perspektive mit dem Altern (oder auch der Entwicklung) der Persönlichkeit beschäftige. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob die landläufige Meinung zutrifft, dass wiretwa mit dem 30. Lebensjahr unsere Persönlichke it ausgebildet haben und uns dann nicht mehr verändern. Für diese Ansicht gibt es durchaus auch wissenschaftliche Befürworter (z.B. Costa & McCrae, 1994). Die Antwort auf die Ausgangsfrage ‚Was ist Altern?‘ wäre dann: Altern ist Stabilität. Wenn es um Altern geht, beschäftigt sich die verhaltenswissenschaftliche Persönlichkeitsforschung aber auch mit der Frage, wie wir mit den Veränderungen fertig werden, die das Altern sowohl im biologischen als auch im sozialen Bereich mit sich bringt. Wie lässt es sich erklären, dass wir mit zunehmendem Alter nicht weniger zufrieden, sondern-wenn überhaupt-eher mehr zufrieden werden (z.B. Staudinger, 2000). Aber bevor wir solchen Fragen auf den Grund gehen können, müssenzunächst zumindest zwei Begriffe geklärt werden: ‚Altern‘ und, ‚Persönlichkeit‘.
