Definition. Hypoglykämien sind häufige Stoffwechselentgleisungen im Kindesalter. Ursachen können verschiedene angeborene Stoffwechseldefekte, Endokrinopathien oder auch nur die Besonderheiten des kindlichen Energiestoffwechsels sein. Hypoglykämien sind gefährliche Störungen der Energiezufuhr, insbesondere für das Gehirn, das seine Energie bei einem ausgeglichenen Ernährungszustand ausschließlich aus Glukose bezieht. Ketonkörper können den Energiestoffwechsel des Gehirns bei akutem Glukosemangel nur begrenzt aufrechterhalten. Erst bei längerem Fasten kann sich der Hirnstoffwechsel an die Utilisation von Ketonkörpern zur Deckung von bis zu zwei Drittel seines Energiebedarfes adaptieren.
