Abstract

This chapter continues the introduction to group theory started in the preceding chapter. Here are listed the more important concepts that are discussed in each section. Sect. 9.1: conjugate elements, conjugacy class, equivalence class, invariant (normal) subgroup, kernel of homomorphism. Sect. 9.2: coset, coset decomposition, Lagrange’s theorem. Sect. 9.3: coset composition, factor (quotient) group. Sect. 9.4: homomorphism. Sect. 9.5: set of generators, cyclic group, generating element. Sect. 9.6: direct product. Sect. 9.7: permutation, symmetric group. Sect. 9.8: Cayley’s theorem.
